Lu’s research interest includes Sewage treatment and resource, Water-energy-carbon system linkages, Soil and groundwater remediation, and Environmental microbial ecology. Lu has published more than 50 articles, in which more than 20 researches were published in the top journals in the field of environment and energy, including Nature Sustainability, Joule, Energy & Environmental Science, Environmental Science & Technology, Water Research, etc. Three of them have been selected as ESI 1% papers with high citation for many times. He has published one book and holds one authorized patent in the United States. The research on electrochemical hydrogen production by low-temperature microorganisms was selected as a landmark achievement in the special issue of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Harbin Institute of Technology, and other research achievements were published by the mainstream media in China and the United States, such as Science Times, the website of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the website of the National Science Foundation of United States, ScienceDaily, and The Engineering, etc. Several developed technologies have been applied in field trials by many world-renowned companies, such as Chevron, an American energy technology company.
